I’ll Give You the Sun

same story told from two perspectives

By Jasmine López, Editor

“I’ll Give You the Sun,” is the second novel by Jandy Nelson. The novel is narrated by the alternating perspective of twins, Jude and Noah set in a coastal Southern California town. They couldn’t be anymore different- Jude has long straight blonde hair and spends her time surfing while Noah has curly brown hair and spends his time drawing and painting situations in his mind- yet they fit together perfectly. However, an accident happened which distanced them from one another. Noah, age 14, narrates the earlier years of their lives, and Jude, age 16, the later years. Their mother encourages the twins to apply to a prestigious art school. Although Jude and Noah compliment each other perfectly, they often find themselves in situations where it causes them to compete. They have the affection of the same boy, competing for their mother’s attention, and even divide the world.

““I gave up practically the whole world for you,” I tell him, walking through the front door of my own love story. “The sun, stars, ocean, trees, everything, I gave it all up for you.”

The author portrays the world as simply not big enough for the both of them. After the accident, Jude and Noah basically swap identities. Art is another member of their family, and Nelson executes the power it has to heal. The reader is able to immerse themself into the story of Jude and Noah while learning while flipping the pages.
