No to Racism: Not in Our House!

Not in Our House: Rally Around the Flagpole

Four years ago, Modesto High conducted a ceremony in honor of the 50th Anniversary of Martin Luther King’s “I Have a Dream” speech.  Dr. King’s speech had resonated among the crowd of 250,000 individuals in the national mall, bringing more attention to the Civil Rights Movement in America.  The speech is approximately 16 minutes long and was delivered August 28, 1963.  He talked of the sins of the country yet to honor the rights of all individuals.  He outlined his dreams that one day all people would be free from the lasting stain of bigotry originating from days of slavery.  Mr. Chiavetta, Mr. Durr, Mr. Taylor, and other staff members and students are spearheading the event in hopes of honoring King and the morality that he stood for.  His passion, drive, and perseverance in the face of hatred changed the face of America forever.

In an interview, Mr. Chiavetta stated that they hope to give the current students of Modesto High a chance to participate in the memorial of such a monumental event in American history.  It is especially important to stand up to the face of racism during such a harsh and controversial political climate.

“There is nothing more patriotic than Civil Rights, embodying the 1st and 14th Amendment of the Constitution” – Mr. Chiavetta.

The event takes place Tuesday, August 29th during 4th and 5th lunch around the flag pole.  Come help MoHi make a stand against racism, bigotry, and hate.  The participants will listen to a full recording of the “I Have a Dream” speech and the event will culminate in the signing of an anti-racism banner that will become one of the Modesto High school wide themes.
