Hurricane Maria

...another catastrophe

By Mehar Nijjar, Reporter

After a series of hurricanes including Hurricane Harvey, Hurricane Irma, and Hurricane Jose, comes yet another natural catastrophe – Hurricane Maria. Announced on Sunday night by the National Hurricane Center, Hurricane Maria is expected to hit Florida as well as Puerto Rico and has already usurped the Caribbean islands. Gradually, Maria intensified to a category 3 hurricane and continues to grow massively. Governor of Puerto Rico, Ricardo Rosello, has announced a state of emergency and had advised careful preparation. “The priority is to be prepared and save lives.” says Rosello.

Governor Ricardo Rosello declares state of emergency in Puerto Rico

This is the first hurricane in Puerto Rico that is expected to hit or even surpass category 4 of intensity. The affected areas can expect up to 12 inches of rainfall, which can cause fatal flash floods and mudslides, threatening the lives. Once winds start moving at 50 miles per hour, rescue workers will not go out as their lives will be at great risk. Schools in Puerto were and remain closed and working adults were instructed to work half day. There are currently 450 shelters for people escaping the flood, however, the need is twice as large.
