First Speech and Debate Tournament of the 18-19 School Year

By Rana Banankhah, Reporter

At 3:00 in the afternoon of Saturday 15, September 2018, hundreds of students huddled around one teacher in Lodi High School’s cafeteria. Students bit their nails as they anxiously awaited the results for their events. The young woman was announcing the winners of the Yosemite Forensics League’s first official speech and debate competition for the 2018-2019 school year.

The Speech and Debate students boarded the bus to Lodi at 6:00 in the morning for a forty five mintue drive. The tournament consisted of events such as Congress, Expository, Advocacy, Oral interpretation, and Original and Informative Oratories. The two main categories of the events were speech and debate. For example, Expository is a type of speech where the competitor prepares a piece with the intention of informing the audience. On the other hand, an example of debate is congress, an event in which a competitor either argues to affirm or negate a resolution or bill. Typically, each event consists of three rounds to be evaluated by different judges. The scores from all three rounds are then calculated and a ranking is determined.Freshman Nithya Medam said, ”

It was actually really exciting and I admire the competetors’ confidence.” Meanwhile, sophmore Harnoor Dhillon said, “I thought that it was interesting because of the amount of diversity throughout the competition.”

As the teacher read out the announcements in the school cafeteria, it was revealed that Modesto High student Reza Banankhah won first place in novice Congress, Manveer Parmar took second place in novice Congress, Gian Arriaga placed second in novice Expository, Josie Judge won second place in novice advocacy, and Ibrahim Dagher won first place in varsity Oratory. Modesto High was overall successful in their first speech and debate tournament. In the future, the Modesto High speech and debate team hopes to achieve more medals and win more competitions.
