Santa?

Ask Chandara No.17

By Chandara Tep, Reporter

This week someone has asked one of the most popular questions among children, “Is Santa real?” The answer is yes, but only if you believe in the spirit of who he truly was. Long ago before he was know as Santa he was a man known as Nicholas. When he was young his parents died and left him a large amount of wealth. Not only was he a wealthy man he was a kind one as well; he was know for helping the poor and secretly giving gifts. One day he discovered a poor man with three daughters who could not afford to obtain dowries for them. Secretly Nicholas had dropped a bag of gold down their chimney, which fell into a stocking drying next to the fire. This allowed the oldest daughter to get married. Nicholas would secretly do this for the man’s children until one night the father had caught Nicholas. To avoid attention Nicholas begged the man not to say a word. However, word has soon gotten out and people learned of his kind actions. Now whenever someone would receive a secret gift they would assume it was from Nicholas. Due to his kind deeds Nicholas was made a Saint, earning him the title of St. Nicholas. As his stories passed through time his identity changed. He had names such as Father Christmas, Old Man Christmas, Père Nöel, Kris Kringle (from the Christkind), and finally Santa Claus (which can about as Dutch settlers can to the U.S.).  So in some odd sense Santa is real as long as you believe in his spirit of kindness.
